Way of Exploding Fist

Description

English (en) — by dalu

The Way of the Exploding Fist - the 1985 martial arts fighting game for
Commodore 64 from Melbourne House.

Compete in one-on-one karate duels across scenic dojos, scoring points
for precision strikes and defense in a disciplined test of timing.

Core loop
- face opponents of rising skill in tournament bouts
- land clean hits to earn half or full points
- reach eight points to claim the black belt rank

Systems and items
- 18 joystick moves - punches, kicks, sweeps, and jumps
- stamina bar - visual cue for damage and endurance
- scoring - full point for decisive strike, half for glancing hit
- two-player mode - direct versus combat on shared screen

Level design and feel
Fixed single-screen arenas with detailed backdrops—mountains, temples,
gardens—each backed by subtle ambient sound. The animation, inspired by
rotoscoped motion, gives the fighters weight and rhythm.

Why it is notable
- one of the earliest serious martial arts simulations on C64
- inspired by Data East’s “Karate Champ” yet deeper in timing nuance
- BAFTA award winner for Best Computer Game of 1985

Tips
- master the low sweep—it beats most advancing attacks
- time your strikes just before contact, not during animation
- use retreat steps to bait high kicks from aggressive foes
