Pitstop 2

Description

English (en) — by dalu

Pitstop II - the 1984 racing game for Commodore 64 from Epyx.

Race high-speed Formula cars in split-screen duels where both players
must not only drive fast but also manage tire wear and fuel through
manual pit stops.

Core loop
- race laps on international circuits against AI or another player
- monitor tire color and fuel gauge for wear and depletion
- pull into the pits, jump out, and refuel or change tires by hand

Systems and items
- split-screen mode - simultaneous two-player racing
- tire wear - performance drops as colors darken from grey to red
- fuel system - run out mid-lap and you’re stranded
- pit crew minigame - repair speed depends on joystick control
- multiple tracks - from Brands Hatch to Sebring and more

Level design and feel
Fast pseudo-3D road perspective with clean horizon and responsive
controls. The split-screen layout keeps solo races tense while adding
head-to-head drama rare on C64. Pit sequences add strategy and rhythm.

Why it is notable
- sequel to Epyx’s “Pitstop,” expanding with true two-player action
- one of the earliest racing games to blend reflex and resource
management
- praised for its smooth frame rate and competitive design

Tips
- pit before tires hit deep red to avoid blowouts mid-race
- conserve fuel by easing off throttle on straights when leading
- in two-player mode, watch the opponent’s pit timing to counter
